Middleburg's Farmers Market Run Now Depends on the Day of the Week

What happens to a Saturday-morning habit that has run since 1994 once its market stops opening? In Middleburg, the answer depends on which day of the week you can spare. When the Town of Middleburg ended its Saturday farmers market for the 2026 season, it didn't direct shoppers to a single replacement. Instead, it recommended three alternative markets in neighboring towns – none of which operate solely on Saturday mornings. For the remainder of the year through December, local food runs shift to weekends out on Route 50 toward Aldie or south toward The Plains.

The Saturday That Closed

The village market had struggled for several years. After three decades of operation, the Middleburg Town Council reached a consensus during a January 30 strategic retreat that the market no longer generated sufficient community value to justify its operating costs and staff time. Although the council voted 4-3 at its February 13 meeting to continue the market and double its funding for a revitalization plan – as reported in Loudoun Now's coverage – attendance remained low. Mayor Bridge Littleton noted that competing regional markets, such as those in Upperville and Gilberts Corner, consistently draw large crowds.

The 2025 season ran on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (May 3 through October 25) at 10 W. Marshall Street, featuring 27 vendors as highlighted in Middleburg Life's announcement. Although the 2026 season was initially slated to open May 2, the town officially canceled it in April. As Northern Virginia Magazine reported, the town issued the following statement:

"In reviewing all options, and considering the limited foot traffic at the market, the ongoing cost and time to manage the market became prohibitive."

The statement thanked vendors and Market Manager Kim Shelly, while directing residents to nearby alternatives: Buchanan Hall Market in Upperville, Archwood Green Barns in The Plains, and Gilberts Corner Farmers Market in Aldie. While town officials previously discussed the possibility of a private operator stepping in, no replacement has been announced, nor are there plans for the municipal market to return in 2027.

Three Markets, Three Schedules

None of the recommended venues duplicates Middleburg's traditional Saturday morning timeframe. Here is how the surrounding options compare for the remainder of 2026, based on published market schedules:

As shown above, the local market circuit shifts noticeably by season. Through mid-October, shoppers could choose between a weekday evening, Sunday mornings, or weekend afternoons. After October 14, options narrow exclusively to weekend markets.

Sundays in a Horse Barn at The Plains

Archwood Green Barns maintains the longest operating calendar among the three alternatives. Located at 4557 Old Tavern Road in The Plains, the market has operated on Sundays for 28 years. Its 2026 schedule spans from January 18 through December 20, comprising a winter run (January 18 – April 12), a main season (April 19 – November 22), and holiday markets on four consecutive Sundays in November and December.

With indoor facilities inside a historic horse barn as well as outdoor vendor tents, Archwood is well-suited for colder weather. Operating under a producer-only rule – requiring vendors to grow or craft their own items – the market features stands such as Willoughby Farms & Flowers, Logan's Crabs, C. Hess Orchard and Produce, Shallowbrooke Acres, Sweet Virginia, Mabel's Bakeshop, and Pastries on the Porch.

Weekends at Gilberts Corner

Gilberts Corner is the only nearby alternative providing Saturday hours. Managed by the Piedmont Environmental Council (PEC) at 39958 Little River Turnpike in Aldie (near the intersection of Routes 15 and 50), the market operates year-round on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. According to PEC's market page, vendors include Big Kyle BBQ, Arno's Pastry, Fun Country Kettle Corn, Bluemont Coffee, Angelic Beef, Nappe Catering, Little Apple Pastry Shop, Mid Atlantic Poultry Farm, Millcreek Farms, Wegmeyer Farm, and Rodriguez Produce.

The site recently underwent structural changes following the removal of a former gas station building in late 2025. PEC maintained market operations throughout the project, preserving historic elements of the site while clearing space for visitors.

The Names That Carried Over

Several vendors previously based at Middleburg's Town Hall market have transitioned to nearby venues. For example, Logan's Crabs & Seafood and Willoughby Farms & Flowers now sell at Archwood Green Barns, while Jimmy's Hatch Pepper Salsa operates at Buchanan Hall. Shoppers seeking familiar local stands can still support these regional producers across the updated weekly schedule.

After October 14

Following the close of Buchanan Hall's season on October 14, remaining 2026 market opportunities include:

  • Every Sunday through November 22: Archwood Green Barns' main season in The Plains.
  • Sundays, November 29 and December 6, 13 and 20: Archwood's holiday market dates, ending with the last market of its 2026 calendar.
  • Saturdays and Sundays: Gilberts Corner in Aldie, which PEC lists as year-round, with Christmas trees in season.

Gilberts Corner remains the sole weekend destination offering Saturday hours late into the year, filling the gap left by the closure of the Middleburg market.
