Boston, Massachusetts

Boston blends historic charm, seasonal scenery, and an impressive food scene, making it a wonderful destination for an autumn weekend.

Indulge your sweet tooth on the Boston Chocolate Tour, which takes visitors through Beacon Hill and downtown Boston beginning September 6 and recurring through the end of December. Along the way, you can sample chocolate treats while exploring some of the city’s most picturesque neighborhoods.

For even more local flavors, visit the Greenway Food Truck Program, where rotating food trucks serve everything from quick lunches to creative desserts. Click here to view the current schedule.

Boston is also home to one of only six Museum of Ice Cream locations. Open year-round, this colorful and interactive attraction offers plenty of photo opportunities and imaginative desserts – including its one-of-a-kind ice cream hot dog. Click here to purchase tickets for the Boston location.

If you are looking to slow down and enjoy the outdoors, take a trip to Willard Brook State Forest. Quiet trails wind beneath oak and maple canopies, while nearby orchards serve fresh cider and warm apple cider donuts during the fall. Consider adding a working farm or historic tavern to your itinerary for an extra taste of New England charm. It is an ideal setting for walking, relaxing outside, and photographing the changing leaves.

Families visiting around Halloween can attend PruBoo 2026, the Prudential Center’s 32nd annual Halloween celebration. Children can trick-or-treat at more than 30 participating stores and restaurants while enjoying face painting, seasonal crafts, magic shows, and a musical performance. Activities are free and open to everyone. Visitors are encouraged to purchase a Prudential Center trick-or-treat bag for a $5 donation benefiting Boston Children’s Hospital.

Bangor, Maine

With seasonal markets, local traditions, and easy access to some of Maine’s most beautiful outdoor destinations, Bangor offers a quieter way to experience New England in the fall.

The Maine Woodcarvers Association Show, taking place on October 3, 2026, showcases the work of talented woodcarvers through competitions featuring songbirds and other intricately carved creations.

On October 4, head to the Bangor Waterfront for the Fall Ritual Market, where more than 40 local vendors and food trucks will gather for a seasonal community celebration.

Later in the season, the Maine Harvest Festival returns on November 12, 2026. This free event celebrates Maine’s agricultural community with local foods, artwork, handmade goods, and other seasonal offerings.

For fall foliage, visit the Bangor City Forest, where peak viewing typically occurs throughout October. This 650-acre retreat features nearly 10 miles of packed-gravel trails for hiking and biking. During peak season, the forest comes alive with brilliant shades of amber, red, and crimson.

For an unforgettable day trip, rent a car and drive approximately one hour to Acadia National Park. One of the country’s most celebrated national parks, Acadia is known for its historic carriage roads, rocky coastline, and Cadillac Mountain – the highest point along the North Atlantic seaboard. Whether you hike, bike, or take a scenic drive, the park offers remarkable views throughout the fall.

Burlington, Vermont

Situated along Lake Champlain with the Green Mountains nearby, Burlington delivers the classic New England fall experience.

The city’s fall foliage transforms its waterfront and surrounding landscapes into a display of brilliant red, orange, and yellow. Take a walk along the Lake Champlain Waterfront, enjoy the mountain views, or plan a scenic drive outside the city to see even more of Vermont’s seasonal color.

Art lovers can visit during the South End Art Hop, a large three-day September festival featuring hundreds of local artists, exhibitions, and open studios throughout Burlington’s South End Arts District.

In the center of the city, Church Street Marketplace offers a lively, pedestrian-only stretch lined with local bookstores, independent shops, restaurants, and cozy cafés. Its brick streets and bustling patios make it an inviting place to spend a crisp autumn afternoon.

Outside Burlington, nearby farms and orchards offer quintessential fall activities such as apple picking, fresh cider, and warm apple cider donuts. Seasonal events also take place along the waterfront, including craft beer celebrations such as Burlington Oktoberfest.

Whether you are interested in art, shopping, local food, or foliage, Burlington makes it easy to enjoy a little bit of everything in one weekend.

Denver, Colorado

Denver combines lively seasonal festivals with convenient access to Colorado’s breathtaking mountains. Visitors can spend one day exploring the city and the next hiking among alpine lakes and golden fall landscapes.

Denver Oktoberfest takes place September 18–20 and September 25–27. Downtown Denver comes alive with German food, beer gardens, live music, festive costumes, and stein-hoisting competitions. Pack your favorite Oktoberfest outfit and join the celebration. General admission is free, while upgraded VIP experiences are available for purchase.

From October 15–18 and October 21–24, the Denver Botanic Gardens will transform into an illuminated autumn wonderland for Glow at the Gardens. Visitors can stroll along glowing pathways, admire hand-carved pumpkins, and watch live performers. Tickets must be purchased online for a specific date and entry time, as they will not be sold onsite.

Film enthusiasts can attend the 49th Denver Film Festival, scheduled for October 22 through November 1. As the Rocky Mountain region’s largest film festival, it showcases independent films from around the world. The complete schedule will be announced soon, so be sure to follow DFF49 updates and purchase tickets early – popular screenings can sell out quickly.

Although Denver offers plenty to see within the city, its nearby trails are difficult to resist. St. Mary’s Glacier is approximately a 45-minute drive from Denver. The moderately challenging trail is about 1.5 miles round trip and rewards hikers with views of a mountain lake, glacier-like snowfield, and colorful fall scenery.

If you are willing to drive farther, visit Emerald Lake Trail in Rocky Mountain National Park. One of Colorado’s most photographed hikes, this approximately 3.2-mile out-and-back trail passes three alpine lakes surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery. A rental car and advance park planning are recommended.

New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans offers a different kind of fall escape – one filled with live music, celebrated food, neighborhood traditions, and just the right amount of Halloween mystery.

The 11th Tremé Fall Festival, scheduled for October 16–24, 2026, celebrates the rich history and culture of New Orleans’ Tremé neighborhood. Visit St. Augustine Catholic Church at 1210 Governor Nicholls Street to enjoy live music, local food vendors, and artwork while supporting the surrounding community. Admission is free, although donations are encouraged to benefit St. Augustine Catholic Church and other local organizations.

No visit to New Orleans is complete without trying a beignet, and the Beignet Festival on November 7, 2026, offers plenty of creative variations. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., visitors can sample traditional beignets alongside imaginative versions featuring crabmeat, fried chicken, and more. Other Louisiana favorites, including jambalaya and gumbo, will also be available. Ticket prices vary by admission option.

The following weekend, head to Louis Armstrong Park at 701 North Rampart Street for the Tremé Creole Gumbo Festival, taking place November 14–15. Local chefs will serve their distinctive interpretations of one of Louisiana’s most beloved dishes while musicians celebrate Tremé’s musical legacy with jazz, blues, and brass-band performances. The festival also includes local artisans, crafts, and activities for younger visitors. Admission is free, with donations encouraged.

New Orleans is especially spirited around Halloween, when haunted tours, voodoo shops, street celebrations, and family-friendly events take over the city. Uptown neighborhoods – particularly around State Street and St. Charles Avenue – are great places to begin if you are looking for trick-or-treating. The city also offers numerous haunted attractions, although some may be too intense for younger visitors.

Savannah, Georgia

Savannah’s historic streets, moss-draped trees, coastal landscapes, and legendary ghost stories make it an especially atmospheric destination during the fall.

Beginning Saturday, October 3, 2026, “Where’s Noble Bones?” invites visitors to participate in a bone-chilling scavenger hunt at Wormsloe State Historic Site. The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each Saturday in October. It is a fun way for friends and families to spend time outside while exploring Wormsloe’s beautiful natural surroundings and historic landscape.

To fully embrace Savannah’s spooky reputation, join the Afterlife Ghost Tour at the Graveface Museum. Located inside the historic riverfront Byck Building, the museum explores subjects including the supernatural, true crime, macabre artifacts, and unusual history. The artifacts housed inside – and the history of the building itself – have helped the museum earn a reputation as a center of paranormal activity. The 2½-hour tour takes place from 9 to 11:30 p.m. on the second Friday of each month and costs $100 per person.

Music lovers can plan their trip around the 45th annual Savannah Jazz Festival, taking place September 18–20, 2026. General admission is free, with optional VIP upgrades available. Scheduled performers include EG Kight, Gino Castillo and the Latin Cowboys, and Huntertones. The festival is known for its strong community atmosphere, diverse jazz performances, food trucks, and lively outdoor setting.

If you are hoping to trade the DMV’s crisp autumn weather for something warmer, spend a day at Skidaway Island State Park. Fall temperatures in the Savannah area generally range from the low 70s to the mid-80s, providing comfortable conditions for exploring maritime forests, boardwalks, and tidal marshes without the intense humidity of summer.

We will hit the road in part two of our Autumn Adventures Await. Stay tuned.
