Where North Bethesda's Quick Meals Went When Pike & Rose Started Booking Dinner

Where North Bethesda's Quick Meals Went When Pike & Rose Started Booking Dinner

In 2026, North Bethesda's culinary landscape saw a clear divide between Pike & Rose and Towne Plaza. Throughout the year, Pike & Rose shuffled its tenant roster, pivoting toward upscale evening dining and paring back grab-and-go options – closing its Grand Park Avenue Starbucks and transforming a former food hall into an exclusive supper club. Meanwhile, virtually every new quick-service brand arriving along Rockville Pike chose to set up shop just up the road at Towne Plaza.

This geographic shift fundamentally changes your options whether you're hunting for a quick weekday lunch, grabbing a morning coffee, or booking a Friday night dinner. Here is a breakdown of what changed across each location.

Three Pike & Rose Spaces, Three Swaps

Most new arrivals at Pike & Rose stepped into turnover spaces, replacing outgoing concepts with similar dining styles.

Was targeting an end-of-September opening

bartaco launched its first Maryland outpost in the former NADA space, initially opening with dinner service before expanding to lunch. The brand brings a relaxed, coastal vibe focused on upscale street food inspired by the beach culture of Brazil, Uruguay, and Southern California.

Char'd replaced BurgerFi at 11881 Grand Park Ave. after the latter shuttered late in 2025. Opening on March 5, this marks the brand's first brick-and-mortar storefront in Maryland following successful runs as a Northern Virginia food truck, a Gaithersburg location, and a spot at Tysons Galleria. Its menu focuses on smash burgers crafted from grass-fed beef, flanked by duck-fat fries, wings, and grilled cheese.

While the first two turnovers maintained their predecessors' general casual-dining formats, the third space underwent a complete reinvention.

The Food Hall Space Now Has a Membership Tier

The space at 967 Rose Ave., home to The Block food hall from 2019 to 2024, is transitioning into MUI Supper Club. The high-end Japanese dining concept highlights A5 wagyu, omakase dining, and dramatic tableside preparations. It also features a tiered membership program (ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 annually) offering perks like priority bookings, private dining access, and off-menu selections.

A preview by The MoCo Show spotlighted decadent menu items such as the Phoenix Egg – a gold-leafed sphere filled with foie gras and black truffle, torched tableside – along with 700-degree volcanic stone hot-rock grilling and a 40-ounce A5 wagyu tomahawk. Replacing the multi-vendor setup of the former food hall, MUI offers a main dining room, a lounge bar, and an intimate six-seat omakase counter serving a 12-course tasting menu over roughly three hours.

While an exact opening date remains unconfirmed following a late-September target, MUI's website lists operating hours from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday through Monday (with late kitchen hours until 11 p.m. on weekends). Walk-ins are welcomed in the bar and lounge area, whereas reservations are required for the dining room and omakase counter.

Regardless of the precise opening day, MUI's late-afternoon start time officially turns the former food hall address into an evening-focused destination.

The Grand Park Avenue Starbucks Closed

The second shift in Pike & Rose's casual landscape occurred just south of Rose Avenue. Following Starbucks' late-September announcement that it would close roughly 250 locations across North America, the 11802 Grand Park Ave. store was slated for closure.

The closure created confusion for patrons: window signage initially cited a "temporary" closure before being updated to announce a permanent shutdown. Nearby store representatives confirmed the final day of operations, directing displaced regulars to the Starbucks located at 17 Paseo Dr.

The situation mirrored a false alarm in September 2025, when an erroneous corporate email mistakenly announced the store's shutdown a year early. This time, however, the closure was official. (The White Oak Town Center location in Silver Spring was also impacted.)

Ice Cream Is Coming Back to Pike & Rose

It's not all closures for casual spots, though: Always Ice Cream Company is targeting a late-November opening at 11802 Rockville Pike, taking over the former PetWellClinic space alongside Chipotle and Visionworks.

Marking its ninth Maryland store, the creamery rotates over 200 small-batch flavors alongside soft serve, sundaes, milkshakes, floats, ice cream cakes, and vegan offerings. Recognized by Fodor's Travel as the top ice cream shop in the country, the family-owned business brings a strong local connection to the neighborhood.

Entertainment options remain intact as well: after facing a potential April closure, the iPic theater at Pike & Rose was acquired by CMX Cinemas, ensuring both iPic and City Perch continue operations.

Towne Plaza Got the Counter-Service Brands

Heading north on Rockville Pike brings you to Towne Plaza – the new hub for North Bethesda's quick-service and grab-and-go additions. Situated beside Federal Plaza, the center has expanded its offerings significantly over the past two years:

  1. Tatte Bakery & Café (12232 Rockville Pike): Opened in January 2025 as Maryland's third location, kickstarting the center's recent retail revitalisation.
  2. California Fish Grill: Opened in November 2025 in the former Katsu Go space, delivering a menu of grilled seafood plates, coastal tacos, and chowder.
  3. Wonder: Launched in June 2026 as the first of four planned Montgomery County locations, offering multi-brand dining for dine-in, pickup, or delivery.
  4. Just Salad (12242 Rockville Pike): Coming soon as Maryland's debut storefront, located directly adjacent to Wonder.

In total, five regional or state brand debuts landed along this corridor within an 18-month span. While Pike & Rose leaned further into full-service evening experiences and premium dining, Towne Plaza solidified its position as the premier destination for casual, convenient daytime dining.

October Plans Along the Pike

Pike & Rose continues to host a full slate of community events throughout the fall:

Looking further ahead, Always Ice Cream's late-November launch remains the next major confirmed opening in the development, with Just Salad preparing to open at Towne Plaza shortly after.

Evolving dining options directly shape the character and day-to-day vitality of North Bethesda neighborhoods.
