Every year on November 11 – the anniversary of the 11th-hour armistice that ended World War I in 1918 – our nation comes together for Veterans Day. Originally celebrated as Armistice Day, the holiday was renamed in 1954 to honor all American servicemen and women who have served during times of both war and peace. Across the Washington metropolitan area, community gatherings, concerts, and solemn ceremonies offer meaningful opportunities to reflect, give thanks, and celebrate their enduring legacy. Here are a few notable events happening around the DMV this Veterans Day.

WASHINGTON, DC
Vietnam Veterans Memorial Veterans Day Ceremony | November 11
Each year on Veterans Day, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund gathers at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., to honor all who served in the United States Armed Forces. Surrounded by the more than 58,000 names inscribed on The Wall, veterans, families, friends, and members of the public come together for a meaningful observance recognizing the service and sacrifice of Vietnam veterans and all those who have worn our nation’s uniform. The ceremony offers a time for remembrance, reflection, and gratitude while ensuring that the legacy of their service continues to be shared with future generations.
Bells of Peace Ceremony | November 11, 11 AM
The Doughboy Foundation, in partnership with the Embassy of the United Kingdom, presents the annual Bells of Peace Ceremony. Prelude music will be provided by the American Expeditionary Forces Band Brass Quintet beginning at 10:45 a.m. Bells of Peace commemorates the end of World War I and honors the 4.7 million Americans who donned the uniform and the 116,516 who lost their lives in that conflict.
Free and open to the public.
National Cathedral Veterans Day Concert | November 11, 6 PM
This Veterans Day, join the United States Marine Band’s ensemble “Free Country” as they honor those who have served in the Armed Forces with a free, public concert. The program will include Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the U.S.A.,” Samuel Augustus Ward’s “America the Beautiful,” and more patriotic favorites. Tickets are not required. Livestream available on the Cathedral’s YouTube channel.
VIRGINIA
National Veterans Day Observance | November 11, 11 AM
The 73rd annual National Veterans Day Observance will take place on Wednesday, November 11, beginning at 11 AM; the observance will also be live-streamed.
Scheduled events for Veterans Day include: the United States Coast Guard Band, accompanied by the U.S. Air Force Singing Sergeants, performing a prelude in the amphitheater at 10:30 a.m.; a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier conducted by the U.S. Army Military District of Washington; and the national observance inside the Memorial Amphitheater with a parade of colors by veterans’ organizations and remarks from dignitaries.
Honoring Veterans Day | November 7, 8, and 11
National Museum of the United States Army
On Veterans Day, we honor the selfless service of individuals from all walks of life who stepped forward to defend our nation throughout our history. Veterans Day also offers an occasion to gather at the National Museum of the United States Army and explore U.S. Army history through the stories of those who have served. Additional special visitor activities will be offered.

Mount Vernon Salutes Veterans Day | November 11, 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
In honor of our nation's veterans, Mount Vernon admits FREE all active-duty, former, or retired military personnel on Veterans Day. All day, veterans are invited to place a floral tribute at the Tomb, provided by the Daughters of the American Revolution.

The Howard County Veterans Day Parade & Celebration honors more than 20,0000 local Veterans and their families.
City of Rockville Veterans Day Ceremony | November 11, 11 AM
Join Rockville’s Mayor and Council for this annual ceremony honoring the men and women who served in the nation’s armed forces. American Legion Post 86 will lead the wreath-laying ceremony, and its honor guard will present a rifle salute.
