Last Minute Gifts for Everyone on Your List

It happens to all of us…you begin December with the best of intentions and make plans to get ahead on all of your holiday gift shopping, only for the middle of the month to approach in the blink of an eye! This festive season definitely goes by fast, and we don’t blame you if you need to tackle a bit of last minute shopping. We’re here to help make things easier on you with a few creative ideas for everyone on your list that certainly won’t make it seem like you procrastinated!

Make Their Fave Workout a Bit Sweeter

If your spouse can’t get enough of SoulCycle, purchase a class pack at their home studio but take this gift to the next level by incorporating a gift card for some sort of post-workout treat. For example, who doesn’t love a South Block smoothie or acai bowl after getting a good sweat in? This combo can be purchased on the fly but will still appear thoughtful!

Get Cooking at Sur La Table

Have a budding chef in your life? Sign them up for an in-store cooking class at Sur La Table, which has multiple locations in the region. The company offers everything from macaron making workshops to brunch extravaganzas—consider buying a seat for yourself, too, so that your spouse or child will have a built-in plus one.

Pick Up a Beautiful Piece of Jewelry

Who doesn’t love receiving a nice piece of everyday jewelry for the holidays? Stop by Gorjana, which has a new location on Bethesda Row, and select a ring, bracelet, or set of earrings.

Plan a Weekend Getaway

January isn’t the most exciting month, but you can make it a bit better by surprising your lucky recipient with a winter getaway. Book a room at a famed spot like The Greenbrier or The Inn at Little Washington, or just plan a little staycation at a hotel in the area. It’s always nice to have something special to look forward to once the festive season is over!

Shop for Stocking Stuffers That They’ll Actually Use

If you’re in need of stocking stuffers that will delight, stop by Tatte Bakery, a Boston-based favorite that now has locations in Bethesda, DC, and Clarendon. Grab a bag of their signature granola or just stock up on gift cards. Tatte’s pastries, coffees, and grain bowls cannot be missed and perfect for the man, woman, or teen on the go!

Mini candles, perfumes, or luxe lip balms also make for excellent stocking stuffers. Stop by one of Bluemercury’s many locations in the DMV and grab a few items for the whole family. You could also consider purchasing a limited edition holiday gift set and dividing it up to fill several stockings!

Chocolate is a simple yet universally loved stocking stuffer that will never disappoint. The Chocolate House in DC is full of delectable, artisanal chocolates from all over the world that come in pretty packaging (always a bonus!). This would be an excellent place to snag any last minute hostess gifts you need to grab, too.

Gift Guide: Top Titles from Birch Tree Books

With the holidays around the corner, Birch Tree Bookstore in Leesburg is here to help you find the perfect gifts for your friends, co-workers, family (or yourself! you deserve a treat, too). We wanted to create a gift guide that would help you find the perfect gifts (books!) for everyone on your list.

As a small, indie bookstore, we very carefully curate books to make sure that our shelves are stocked with relevant, meaningful titles to suit a wide audience of readers, both those who are new to reading and those who are book lovers.

Leah Fallon started Birch Tree out of the trunk of her car in the summer of 2020. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic showed Leah that people need and want books now more than ever.

Birch Tree has grown since those days, morphing into a pop-up, then graduating into a building in Leesburg. This month, Birch Tree just celebrated moving into its one, true home: 11 W Market Street, Leesburg, Virginia. (Across the street from McEnearney Associates new Leesburg location!)

Children’s Picture Books

[smartslider3 slider=”92″]

Let’s start the holiday shopping spree with some books for the little ones in your life. Local author Deb Shumaker’s newest book Peculiar Primates is on the shelves! Speaking of local authors, Leesburg’s own Laura Renauld has just published her third in a series of animal stories, Squirrel’s Sweater. Pair either book with a Fair Trade toy for extra fun!

Elementary-School-Age Books

[smartslider3 slider=”93″]

For an elementary-school-age kid (or any kid-at-heart!) there’s nothing quite as magical as the new illustrated Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Jim Kay’s illustrations bring the story to life… like magic! These are real treasures; the kind of books anyone can pore over for hours.

As an honorable mention, the wildly popular Warriors series just welcomed its newest addition, The Starless Clan #2: Sky

Young Adult (YA) Books

Moving on over to the young adult shelf: The Sunbearer Trials is Aiden Thomas’s latest masterpiece. Most teenagers will have grown up reading the Greek myth retelling, Percy Jackson, in middle school, so they’ll love this South American myth retelling.

Nonfiction Books & Memoirs

[smartslider3 slider=”94″]

For the non-fiction lovers, Bono’s memoir Surrender: 40 Songs One Story is a must. In Bono’s own words “Surrender is the story of one pilgrim’s lack of progress… With a fair amount of fun along the way.”

Next to the non-fiction is the memoir shelf. With our neighbors at McEnearney in mind, Joanna Gaines’s new memoir The Stories We Tell jumped off the shelf. Pair this thoughtful book with a journal so your reader can reflect and write about their own lives.

Fiction Books

[smartslider3 slider=”95″]

For the general fiction readers, the iconic Cormac McCarthy is back with a new release! The Passenger promises depth, heartbreak, genre-bending, and the philosophical, dreamlike prose that McCarthy readers would expect.

Honorable mention: the exquisite Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow (and just look at that cover!).

Mystery & Suspense Books

Now things are getting a little more… mysterious. Daisy Darker offers drama and mystery that would even make Agatha Christie herself proud.

Science Fiction & Fantasy Books

[smartslider3 slider=”96″]

On the next shelf over in speculative fiction, you’ll find the new historical fantasy, Babel. Comfortably chunky, just the way we fantasy readers like, this book is written by the up-and-coming R.F. Kuang.

However, if you’re looking for more of a stocking-stuffer, see this mini, immaculate edition of Galatea by Madeline Miller (the queen of the myth retelling).

Romance Books

For a fun, festive rom-com, look no further than local author Jean Meltzer’s The Matzah Ball. An enemies-to-lovers romance full of laughter, love, and celebration – perfect for the holidays.

Coffee Table Books, Cookbooks, & Statement Pieces

[smartslider3 slider=”97″]

Anyone (musicians and non-musicians alike) will enjoy Bob Dylan’s The Philosophy of Modern Song. Like his music, Dylan’s essays are accessible, funny, and reflective in a way that makes you feel connected to yourself and your community.

When in doubt, everyone loves a cookbook during the holidays. For a fun, sweet treat, the local bakery Red Truck has released their second cookbook, Red Truck Bakery: Sweet and Savory Comfort Food from America’s Favorite Rural Bakery. For a practical, every-day-use cookbook, go for a tried and true Smitten Kitchen publication with their new book, Smitten Kitchen Keepers.

There really is a book for everyone, and nothing says “I know you well” like a handpicked book. Whether you opt for hardcover or paperback, set up your friends and family for cozy winter evenings with a memorable, meaningful story.

Laura Seabourne is a bookseller at Birch Tree Books and a lifelong book-lover. She particularly loves science fiction and fantasy, but really, how can a reader choose just two favorite genres? In her spare time, she enjoys reading books, thinking about books, teaching books, writing about books… and knitting, of course. CR: Legends and Lattes and Bird by Bird.

Getaways November 24, 2022

A Weekend Getaway to the Brandywine Valley

Located just a couple hours north of the Washington metropolitan area, the Brandywine Valley is the perfect destination for a festive December getaway. The natural beauty of the area was captured by renowned artist Andrew Wyeth, who highlighted its distinctive color palette. With attractions in and around Wilmington, Delaware and Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, the area is well known for the historic houses and gardens of the du Pont family, which are beautifully decorated for the holiday season. Weekends do get busy, so we suggest buying tickets ahead of your visit. Or, maybe plan a mid-week trip to ignite your holiday spirit.

Outdoors, stroll among illuminated trees, cozy fire pits, and an amazing tunnel of light. Additional events include musical performances. If you plan to stay into the evening, book a reservation at 1906 or dine à la carte at The Café.

Brandywine River Museum of Art

Renowned for its holdings of the Wyeth family of artists, the Brandywine River Museum of Art features galleries dedicated to the work of N. C. Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth, and Jamie Wyeth. The Museum’s outstanding Heritage Collection is a cross section of American art, with a special focus on artistic practice in the Brandywine valley.

Special Holiday Events include:

  • Holiday Critter Sale – December 1-4 at the Chadds Ford Historical Society, 1736 Creek Rd, Chadds Ford, PA. These delightful, distinctive ornaments are handmade of natural materials such as pine cones, acorns, seed pods, and the like. Critters come in all kinds of forms from dogs, bears, and reindeer to angels and stars.
  • Brandywine Railroad – Through January 8, 2023. A holiday favorite since 1972, the Brandywine Railroad features trains running on 2,000 feet of track and contains more than 1,000 pieces, including locomotives, passenger and freight trains, and trolleys that pass through a small village, a farm, factories, a drive-in movie theater, and even a carnival.

Delaware Art Museum

The Delaware Art Museum is best known for its large collection of British Pre-Raphaelite art, illustrations by Wilmington native Howard Pyle, urban landscapes by John Sloan, and a locally significant collection of American art spanning the 18th to 21st centuries. Current exhibitions include: Forgotten Pre-Raphaelites and A Marriage of Arts & Crafts: Evelyn & William De Morgan.

Shopping & Dining

What weekend getaway would be complete without a bit of shopping and dining? The towns of the Brandywine Valley deliver on charm and sophistication. You can shop and eat local all weekend!

Kennett Square, PA

Known as the Mushroom Capital of the World, Kennett Square, Pennsylvania is a charming borough close to Longwood Gardens. The downtown is part of the National Register of Historic Places with 507 protected buildings built between 1875 and 1924 and in a variety of popular architectural styles including Colonial Revival, Victorian, and Federal. As you stroll the shops of the main street, stop in at Talula’s Table gourmet market for a tasty lunch.

During the first two weekends of December, the Kennett Collaborative presents the Kennett Square Holiday Village Market at The Creamery of Kennett Square (December 3, 4, 10 & 11, 11AM-5PM). Reminiscent of a German Christkindlmarkt, the holiday village features dozens of artisan and vintage vendors, live music, ice sculpture demonstrations, fire pits, s’mores, Santa Claus, food trucks, handcrafted and warming festive drinks.

West Chester, PA

Winner of the 2017 Great American Main Street Award from Main Street America, West Chester, Pennsylvania, offers the perfect mix of historical charm and small-town allure with the excitement of a busy nightlife and dining. Iron Hill is a true local favorite for dinner and, if you happen to be in town on December 2, don’t miss the West Chester Christmas Parade.

Rock That Raspberry Blush

In case you haven’t heard, paint company Benjamin Moore recently announced its color of the year for 2023. The lucky winner? Raspberry Blush, a beautiful reddish pink that’s full of charm and energy. Not sure how to incorporate this hue into your home? Read on for five of our favorite ways to have fun with the latest “it” color.

Add Pep to a Powder Room

Designers love using powder rooms to take risks with color and pattern. Why? Because these spaces can so easily be closed off from the rest of the home and won’t interfere with a more neutral color scheme. A Raspberry Blush powder room would be absolutely adorable! Take down that builder grade mirror and install something brass and ornate, then hang a couple of cute sconces on either side, too. Your family and your guests are bound to love this look.

Jazz Up a Pantry

Your pantry is primarily a utilitarian space, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be full of life and appear a bit playful! Paint the pantry walls Raspberry Blush and perhaps packing those lunchboxes or putting away groceries will feel like less of a chore. And use this as an opportunity to corral all of the miscellaneous items in your pantry once and for all—a little bit of color and some organization bins will turn even the most chaotic space into a chic one.

Transform the Inside of Your Closet

If you’ve always dreamed of a closet fit for a true fashionista, now is the time to act on that vision! First, you’ll want to go bold and feminine with some Raspberry Blush paint on each wall. The hue is perfect for a walk-in closet; it will bring those chic dressing room vibes from your favorite boutique into your own home. We suggest installing some white lacquer shelves for displaying your go to bags and shoes. Then, grab some acrylic jewelry holders and showcase your most vibrant baubles. When your closet looks this good, getting ready for the day will feel like you’re taking part in a fashion show.

Cover an Interior Door

Maybe you’re not quite ready to go bold when it comes to your front door, and we totally understand—but why not give one of your interior doors a bit of a facelift with Raspberry Blush? Painting interior doors is a great way to add some intrigue to your home, and a door is small enough that it’s easy to repaint quickly if your style changes down the line. So if you have a spare hour and feel like getting your painting on, what’s holding you back?

Paint the Ceiling

Decorated ceilings are having a major moment in the design world. Whether you spruce yours up with paint or wallpaper, you can’t go wrong. We like the idea of taking a simple room with white or gray walls and adding a pop of Raspberry Blush to the ceiling for a bit of dramatic flair. Complete the look by installing an eye-catching light fixture, like a glittery chandelier or a sleek brass pendant. Your home will have never looked better!

Ready to turn the page?

Are you feeling either unsettled or bored?

Take a look at challenges faced by five of my recent buyers and see if you find yourself in their shoes.

  1. Active, handsome fellow using lots of energy walking his dog, but cursing his aching knees when climbing stairs in his townhouse.
  2. Dynamic, world-traveler in need of pizazz, after years in her large Arlington house, proud of her garden but tiring of lawn-mowing and repair responsibilities.
  3. Couple well-known in Atlanta for their neighborhood parties, transferring and forced to give up their famous outdoor pizza oven for urban living.
  4. Busy professional woman deciding whether to up-light the dramatic landscaping around her estate-sized home ($$$) or explore a totally new lifestyle instead.
  5. Fun duo living with history, contemplating stepping away from years of renovation and restoration to find classy new one-level living with water views.

For so many reasons and personal experiences, I am finding buyer after buyer wanting to turn the page. These wise ones are not following, but creating, a trend to reward themselves with their own “happy” place. They are figuring out what they want but do realize that some compromises will be required. I hear them saying to themselves “step away from the warming drawer and embrace the wine refrigerator,” “let’s bag snow shoveling and applaud the work of doormen and porters,” and “next steps, no steps.”

Consider me your part-time life whisperer. I ask questions such as “how often do you really have houseguests?” “Would you like to simply pack a bag and head to the airport for Nantucket or Florence?” “Is that cherry buffet from your great-grandmother cherished by other family members who would like it delivered next week?” “Will you read those books a second time?” and “Do you need the phone number for 1-800-GOTJUNK?”

After “whispering,” it’s time to consider individual concerns and get real life suggestions. Do you need that amount of square footage? If you’ve always wanted a place for a piano, go for it. Concerned about making paint selections and appropriately-sized furniture choices — hire a designer! What really will make your life more enjoyable?

So, what happened to each of my friends above?

  1. He happily garages his car, takes a short elevator ride up to greet the waiting dog ready for her walk and lives in a glamorous, one-level condominium complex at the north end of Old Town. (We sold the pretty townhouse to younger-kneed people).
  2. Three days after settlement of her detached house, she moved into a very hip-and-cool new condominium in D.C.’s Dupont/Shaw, took delivery of all her furniture stored in a POD during house marketing and is getting to know her neighbors.
  3. Amazingly, their big NW D.C. luxury residence gives them almost more useable space than their detached Atlanta home, so they are inviting lots of friends and family to visit this special historic condo while searching for the best brick oven pizza in town — ideas?
  4. Still a work in progress, she is looking toward a 2023 move, while we study a wide range of striking D.C., Alexandria and Fairfax properties which must accommodate a grand piano or two.
  5. Since those wished-for water views might not be in Florida but in Alexandria instead, they are enjoying the fruits of their labors in their restored circa 1880 townhome, now almost ready for the market when the time is right, and the special water view residence is found.

So where are you in your journey — beginning, middle or already “in your happy place?” There is no script for getting there, just decisions, compromises and making it up as you go along. Without naming names, I can share the experiences of others and provide resources that will help… from suggesting handymen/women, painters, designers, movers and more. We Realtors are important partners in your “page turning.” Of course, the stocking of that wine refrigerator for those discussions is a good place to start, too!

The Benefits of Relocation Services

Buying and selling a home can be exciting and stressful all at the same time. Locally, most people know at least one real estate agent; whether an agent they have used before or someone they are acquainted with. If not, recommendations from a friend, family member, or trusted advisor are a great place to start. However, there may come a time when you have a real estate need outside of your local real estate market. When looking for an agent, you have to remember that anyone can build a beautiful website and hire a professional marketing team to support them, that doesn’t guarantee they are experienced or the best agent for your needs.

Knowing a Realtor who is part of a truly global network of vetted professionals is key. At McEnearney Associates, we are fortunate to be a member of Leading Real Estate Companies of the World® (LeadingRE). LeadingRE is home to the world’s market-leading independent residential brokerages in over 70 countries, with 550 firms and 136,000 sales associates making 130 client introductions, producing 1.2 million global transactions in 2021. Our by-invitation-only network is based on the unparalleled performance and trusted relationships that result in exceptional client experiences.

Why is this important to you?

We want to ensure that you receive the same professional service anywhere in the world that you receive from us. The three most common reasons clients reach out for recommendations outside our local area include: job relocation, family needs, and life-style changes.

Job Relocation

Many employers offer a variety of packages from full relocation to flat-fee services, while other employers are not equipped to provide relocation services. If Realtor recommendations are part of your relocation program or suggested by a co-worker, you should still do your research. Job relocations add an extra level of stress due to time constraints of the position start, selling your current home, relocating family, and more. The right Realtor is experienced in your market but also “relocation best practices,” fully understanding the relocation processes, additional paperwork, and requirements of the employer so that you can take full advantage of all relocation benefits. When you are not offered relocation benefits by your employer, you must find the right agent on your own; not just an experienced one, but an agent with a true relocation background, because it will make all the difference in your move.

Family Needs

From growing families to downsizing, inherited homes to vacant land, relocation trained agents are equipped to assist with all types of family situations as they arise. For example, when parents are no longer able to age in place, relocation agent services can include: complimentary market analysis noting as-is and repaired/improved values; supplier introductions from repairs to improvements and cleaners to movers. A relocation trained agent is a full-service Realtor who specializes in the area and type of transaction you are navigating, as well as proficiency in working with out-of-town clients.

Life-Style Changes

Often buyers are comparing multiple areas as a potential destination for retirement, investment property or even a second home. Relocation specialists offer more than housing information; they provide cost of living comparisons, area tours, local life-style information, and market trends to assist you in decision making.

The best Realtors are more than local, they can also provide global real estate services. When you need an agent recommendation, anywhere in the world, McEnearney Associates are happy to help. We are your Trusted Relocation Resource.
