Top August Events to Check Out in Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia

If you’re in town between vacations or need a break from preparing for the school year to start, there is still plenty to do in our area! Grab an ice cream treat from one of our favorite ice cream shops, take your pup to a different dog park, or try out something new this month – county fairs abound! Below is our top selection of August events around Washington DC, Northern Virginia, and Maryland. 

 

WASHINGTON, DC

 

Citi Open Tennis | Through August 6

Rock Creek Park Tennis Center

Falling between Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, this tournament brings some of the world’s best men’s and women’s tennis players to DC. It’s also a great chance to see future Grand Slam Champions.

Concerts at the Capitol | Friday Nights in August, 8PM

West Side of U.S. Capitol, Washington, DC

Enjoy free concerts at the Nation’s Capital. Inclement weather cancellation will be made by 6PM and posted on the U.S. Army Band’s social media pages.

Summer Movies Series: Carnegie Library | August 17, 6:30 – 10:30PM

Carnegie Library at Mt. Vernon Square, On The Lawn

This event features Disney’s Turning Red, favorite movie snacks and light fare, fun activities, a DJ and community resources. It is encouraged to bring a lawn blanket or chair to watch during the movie.

Middleburg’s Summer Sidewalk Sale | August 4-6, 10AM – 5PM

Downtown Middleburg

Many of the town’s retailers on Washington Street, Madison Street, and Federal Street will be moving discounted items to the tree-lined sidewalks for the 17th annual Summer Sidewalk Sale.

 

Prince William County Fair | August 11-19

Prince William County Fairgrounds

14th Annual Alexandria Summer Sidewalk Sale | August 12

King Street, Alexandria

This year’s event features more than 40 Alexandria boutiques stepping out of their storefronts and offering deeply discounted summer merchandise, plus live music activations on King Street to provide a soundtrack to your strolling.                                             

 

TASTE Leesburg | August 12, 5 – 10PM

Downtown Leesburg

Kwame Onwuachi Presents The Family Reunion | August 17 – 20

Salamander Resort & Spa, Middleburg

National Oyster Week | August 1-6

Howard County Fair | August 5-12

2210 Fairgrounds Road, West Friendship

One of the area’s more agricultural fairs, the 76th Annual Howard County Fair is a great place to learn about horses, cattle, livestock, poultry, domestic arts, farming, and gardening. Of course there’s lots of food, rides, and other fun activities, too.

Kiana Honarmand: A Shadow in the Depth of Light | Through August 6

VisArts, 155 Gibbs Street, Rockville

The exhibition A Shadow in the Depth of Light pays tribute to the Woman Life Freedom protests in Iran, which began in September 2022 after the murder of Mahsa (Jina) Amini by the morality police in Iran.

Maryland Summerfest 2023 | August 26, 11AM – 6PM
